Kadamay Demands Immediate Rescue From Flood, “Wag Marikina Lang!”

Kadamay leader National Chairperson Gloria “Ka Bea” Arellano is now demanding the government for an immediate rescue to families in relocation sites that were trapped in floodwater due to heavy rains spawned by the southwest monsoon. Aside from blaming the Duterte administration, she also noted that Marikina is not the only area that needs help.

“We are now calling for the quick response of the administration because lives are at stake and death may result if they are negligent in addressing the needs of the people. This is not the first time that this happened and the government should have learned from the past typhoon,” Arellano said in a statement last Sunday afternoon.

“There are really too many people in Metro Manila but instead of helping the poor communities in terms of sanitation, they are always blamed by the government. In times of calamity, the poor are disadvantaged. Their lives are always in danger because of communities that lack decent facilities. They are not to blame, they are victims,” she added.

According to Arellano, two residents at the Kasiglahan Village in Rodriguez, Rizal were electrocuted to death and almost 2,000 families were trapped for hours because of the flood, adding that no help from the government has arrived despite making calls to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) several times.

“We also understand that Markina residents had the worst experience in flooding, but it does not mean the government should focus on them alone. Gaya nila, naging biktima din kami. Kaya dapat huwag Marikina lang.” She added, emphasizing that residents at relocation sites in Bulacan also suffered from knee-level flood with mud.

Meanwhile, the water level in Marikina River continues to go down after it reached to 20.5 meters last Saturday that forced more than 4,300 families (around 21,300 people) in the city to evacuate. Nevertheless, weather bureau PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) on Monday morning still warns of possible flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
