Jinggoy Estrada to Run for Senator in 2019 Under LP Resistance Coalition

Former Senator Jinggoy Estrada is set to run for senator in the coming 2019 elections. But because the ruling party, Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) did not include him in their senatorial list, he recently accepted the offer of Liberal Party (LP) to Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) to join its Resistance Coalition.

“Yes, our party is very glad that (Jinggoy) Estrada accepted our offer. Along with him, we believe that the Resistance Coalition is now getting stronger.” Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, who is also LP’s vice president for internal affairs told reporters Friday, April 27, adding former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada knows about it.

“The party has also discussed this matter to President Mayor Erap and he had a quick go signal, no questions ask. After all, it’s just a coalition and their principles may still be different from ours. The aim here is to strengthen the Opposition, and we believe other parties will also join us. This is to save the country from dictatorship” Baguilat added.

As of posting, Jinggoy has not yet officially announced it. Nevertheless, Baguilat said that LP President Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan is also excited to see the former senator as among their senatorial bets. So far, only former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Senator Benigno “Bam” Aquino III are most likely to run in 2019 under LP.

Last week, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III announced that he chose incumbent Senator JV Ejercito over his half-brother Jinggoy. As response, the latter thanked PDP-Laban for accepting. However, he noted that there was condition that he and Jinggoy should not be running at the same time under one particular party.

“I am thankful to SP Koko for that trust and confidence, but it was really his decision, there is no condition imposed that there should only be one member of the family. I didn’t ask for this. Perhaps he knows the performance of his colleagues in the Senate, that is probably his basis for giving priority to re-electionists,” Sen. Ejercito said at that time.
