“Mayor Inday Sara is the closest to the heart of President (Rodrigo) Duterte, so definitely she has all the rights to replace [Sen. Koko] Pimentel as president of the party. Now, if Sen. Sotto will be Senate president then we shall need her influence to lead us.” PDP-Laban Vice President Alfonso Cusi told reporters on Friday, May 18.

Cusi, who is also the secretary of the Department of Energy (DoE), added that there will be some arrangements to be made within PDP-Laban. However, he emphasized that all party members will vote Sara Duterte as the new party president. This is despite the fact that the presidential daughter is a member of regional political party, Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod.

“We also believe in her capabilities as a strong leader, considering her long experience as mayor and vice mayor. Not to mention, her father is the president of the country and the national chairman of PDP-Laban. It is therefore without any hesitation for the entire party to have a coalition with her party. We will welcome her with open arms.” He added.

Last February, when Mayor Inday Sara launched a new political party called Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) as support for President Duterte’s projects. At that time, Pimentel said that members of PDP-Laban can be a member of a local party and partylist. As a response, the presidential daughter said she is open to be allied with a national party.

Last Thursday, fifteen senators signed a resolution to elect Senator Tito Sotto as Senate president. They are Grace Poe, Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Chiz Escudero, Win Gatchalian, Dick Gordon, Gringo Honasan, Ping Lacson, Loren Legarda, Manny Pacquiao, Ralph Recto, Joel Villanueva, Cynthia Villar and Migs Zubiri.
